Before writing the first line of custom software, you need to choose its tech stack. That choice affects cost, speed, security and your ability to evolve the project for years. Here is how to make it without unnecessary jargon.
What is a tech stack?
It is the set of technologies that run your project:
- the front end: what users see (pages, forms, dashboards);
- the back end: business logic, accounts, rules, the API;
- the database: where your data lives (customers, orders, stock);
- hosting and deployment: servers, containers, CDN, backups.
The criteria that really matter
- Project type: a content site, a business app and a SaaS have different needs.
- Speed and SEO: essential for anything that must be found on Google.
- Maintainability: readable code, stable and well-documented technologies.
- Available skills: picking a technology with plenty of developers in Morocco avoids depending on a single person.
- Total budget: development, hosting and maintenance over several years, not just the upfront cost.
- Security and data: authentication, access rights, compliance with Law 09-08 when handling personal data.
Stack examples by project
Business website or content site
A static site generator such as Astro, served from a CDN: ultra-fast pages, excellent SEO, almost no maintenance. It is the basis of most of our web development projects, including this website.
Business application (management, light ERP, back office)
A proven back-end framework like Laravel (PHP), an interface in Vue.js or React and a MySQL or PostgreSQL database. A robust choice for orders, stock or appointment management, with a large developer community.
SaaS or online platform
A solid back end (Laravel or Node.js), a PostgreSQL database, a well-documented API and container-based deployment (Docker) so the platform can evolve without downtime.
Mobile app
Flutter or React Native give you one codebase for Android and iOS. The same API as your website or back office powers the mobile app : one system, not two.
Mistakes to avoid
- Picking a trendy technology nobody will be able to maintain.
- Building a full SaaS when a prototype would be enough to test the idea.
- Leaving hosting, backups and monitoring out of the budget.
- Not getting the source code and access at the end of the project.
Our method
We start from your needs, not from a favourite technology: goals, users, data volume, budget and expected growth. We then propose a reasoned stack, with its trade-offs, before writing any code. Have a custom software project? Let's talk , or read our guide mobile app or website .
